Here are two things I know about macadamia nuts: They taste good in cookies and they can make my dog sick. And now every time I open the pantry and see the half empty jar of macadamias, I picture Fuzz dropping them on the floor, Lizzie eating them, and the whole family sitting in the waiting room of the 24 hour animal hospital. What did I buy them for? Oh, right. Cookies. Well fine. But they were making me nervous so I decided to finish off the jar so Lizzie wouldn’t be dancing so close to the fire.
I am not sure which recipe I like better – this white chocolate macadamia cookie or the one I used a few weeks ago. This dough is less sweet and a bit more salty and that’s actually a good thing, because the less sweet dough makes the sweet white chips stand out and the sweet white chips taste great with the extra salt. So for now, I’m going to say this one’s better, though I’d have to taste them side by side to be really sure.
If you don’t take my word for it, you can take the source. I found this on Yahoo Answers where people were looking for recipes similar to the white chocolate chip cookies sold at Subway. Hmmm. Okay. Based on other Google searches for similar cookies, I believe the original source is a Good Housekeeping cookbook. Not sure, but below is how I made the cookies.

White Chocolate Chip Macadamia Nut Cookies
1-1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup unsalted butter
1/2 cup packed brown sugar
1/4 cup granulated sugar
1 large egg
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
3/4 cup white chocolate baking chips (Ghirardelli)
1 cup chopped macadamia nuts (lightly salted type)
Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.
Combine flour, baking soda, and salt and set aside.
Beat butter and both sugars until creamy. Beat in egg and vanilla until well combined. Add flour mixture and stir just until blended. Stir in white chocolate baking chips and macadamia nuts.
Drop dough by rounded tablespoons, 2 inches apart, on two ungreased cookie sheets. Bake until golden around edges, 10 to 12 minutes, rotating cookie sheets between upper and lower oven racks halfway through baking. With wide spatula, transfer cookies to wire racks to cool completely.
Makes about 36 cookies

Can they possibly be better than the Masterpiece White Chocolate Macadamia Cookies?
Hi
I was looking for some recipes and your blog came up on my search. uau, you have a great blog and wonderful recipes.
I love macadamia and your cookies look fab.
Hi Anna,
Thanks so much for sharing this recipe. I was in search of a white chocolate cookie recipe and it looks like this one fits the cause.
I love these. White choco & macadamia go so well together. I actually bought a jar of these nuts to make these type of cookies, but ended up eating them with a nice cold beer.
Have you ever tried adding dried cranberries to this batter? Try it, it’s really quite tasty.
Hi Anna,
I’ve been reading your blog for a while, but have never commented until now! I LOVE cookies and I LOVE your blog! Everything looks so delicious. I have a big list of a bunch of recipes from you that I need to try. Just thought I’d let you know that I thoroughly enjoy “Cookie Madness!”
Wait–dogs can’t eat macadamia nuts? My dog eats peanut butter and cashew nuts and butter all of the time, and I know you said Lizzie had pb without any problems. What happened?
YUM!! Aww, Lizzie, haha :0)
Just for info, a macadamia website called http://www.intermac.com.au says to store opened macadamias in a cool place, preferably in the fridge. I assume this is to keep the high fat content from going rancid. But no cholesterol!
HeartofGlass–Peanut butter and Cashew butter are okay for dogs (other than the high fat and the high phosphorus content, which can lead to eventual bladder stones.)
Macadamia nuts however ARE toxic to dogs and causes macadamia nut toxicosis if they eat them.

hmmm.I never knew that mac nuts could kill dogs!!
Sue, they are different. They are softer, fatter, and smaller. I think they might be a bit richer too.
Leila, thanks for the nice comment
Louise, I think this might be my favorite white chocolate macadamia cookie of all time. I hope you like it!
Dawn, cranberries would be really good here.
Sara, let me know if you try anything off the list. I’m always curious to hear people’s results.
Heart of Glass, yes! Macadamia nuts are bad. You’ve probably looked it up on Google already, but apparently they have something in them that’s poisonous to dogs.
VG, I need to post a Lizzie pic just for you
Liz, thanks for the link. I had no idea that macadamias should be stored in the refrigerator. I don’t buy them very often, but if I ever buy them again, I will store them there.
Julie, thanks for the link.
*Sigh* I love Cookie Madness.
It’s a place where we can join together and talk about our love for cookies.
These look excellent.
I am so glad that I can play with you all !! Yum these look so great – you always do such an amazing job tempting our tummies!!
Cheers
Cathy

PS – Dogs and chocolate do not mix either
Sorry to hog your blog with ‘dog talk’ but re: the macadamia nuts–I’ve had dogs since I was 8 years old, and never knew that…of course I’ve known that dogs can’t process caffine for many years and that chocolate and coffee is verboten for them.
I don’t feed my dog gobs of pb and cashews, but many vets suggest pb in home-baked treats and on food to encourage picky dog-eaters (also parmesan cheese). The macadamia nut toxicity should be more publicized, given how many dog owners give their dogs nuts.
I think if I make these cookies I may try cashews. It may be a little while before I can eat macadamias, now!
Heart of Glass, I know what you mean! I had dogs when I was a kid and my family didn’t know anything about the macadamia issue either. What do people in Hawaii do? They have macadamai nuts all over the place.
I love making choc.chip/mac cookies… in fact I used to be in love with the Mrs. Field’s kind when those stores were around. I have a tough time finding mac. nuts at a good price. Any secret sources?
I wish my pictures looked that good! I wanted to reach into my screen and nab one of those litte beauties!!
These are definitely next on my list of cookies to bake!
I can’t wait to try these!
I think I gain 5 lbs every time I LOOK at this blog!
I happened upon your blog by wag of a Google search. I was searching for a white chocolate macadamia nut blondie with a butterscotch/toffee drizzle recipe (I found this & lost it). Not wanting to squander my baking day nor my ingredients and decided to give these a try. These are very close to Subways (those are a hint sweeter but I used lt br sug) but definitely a keeper. Thanks for sharing….now I’m off to see what other goodies you’ve posted!
Hi Stephanie,
Thanks for stopping by! I hope you find some other cookies you like.
These are the first cookies I ever successfully baked and I must say, THANK YOU! I made them for my birthday and can’t wait until I have the money to make them again.I put in more than a cup of Nestle white chocolate chips and they turned out amazing. They were very attractive too, and that’s not something I’ve come to expect from anything I make. They were eaten right up by the picky eaters in my household.
where do you buy the nuts, I looked for it at local grocery stores such as Vons and could not find them except when I looked online, and I do not want to buy nuts over the internet. Thank you
