Tongue Guard!

by on May 13, 2010 · 16 comments

I’m trying to post less personal stuff for those interested in *baking* (Rock on!), but today’s an exciting day for Fuzz. She’s getting her tongue guard out! A little over a year ago on a day I made vegan chocolate cupcakes, I talked about how hard it was for her emotionally and how she was doing her best to deal with it.

A lot can happen in a year. Her open bite, which was caused by her habit of thrusting her tongue against her front teeth when she spoke, is completely gone. And over the course of a year she became so comfortable with the tongue guard that she says it feels like part of her body and wants to keep it by her bedside forever.

So kids — if you happen to be getting tongue guard, it’s not so bad.

Today Fuzz gets fitted for a retainer, and then we are going to the grocery store to buy a cartload of popcorn.

My son had to wear something in his mouth when he was a child too. It annoyed the hell out of him…but it was overly quickly enough and morphed into braces.
Most of us have had to wear braces (not fun) and at my age I actually had braces again! (No such thing as retainers back when I had braces originally) They are off now and I am faithful about wearing my retainer. So important! The rest of your life too, so you don’t have to have braces a second time.
Congrats to Fuzz! Hang in there, it’s all worth it!

Even tho you’re trying to be less personal…how’s that Lizzy?

Yeah, go Fuzz! She sure deserves those popcorn!

I vaguely remember reading about Fuzz’s tongue guard, and feeling bad because I can definitely relate, thanks to my own tooth abnormalties (imagine going through junior high with a missing front tooth and a small front tooth- both just common genetic defects, but still!!)

Good thing we’ve made loads of advancements in medical technology to correct even the tiniest deformities! Hooray for Fuzz =)

I can’t believe it’s been a year since Fuzz got her tongue guard. Will she have to use the tongue guard again or just the retainer? Yeah for her!!!!

I left my computer and came back to find Fuzz sitting here reading all your comments. She’s not that fast at typing, but she says thanks for all the comments and that she did buy some popcorn — Act II Butter Flavor. She also bought some Trident Gum.

Oh yeah, and Lizzie is awesome! She’s doing great. We love her so much.

I miss the personal things! Yay for Fuzz!

Glad you had that done when Fuzz is still a child. I tongue thrust and have an open bite. But because I’m an adult, the dentist and orthodontist say there is nothing they can do about. They only tell me to place my tongue on the roof my mouth when I swallow!
