Breville Stand Mixer Giveaway

by Anna on December 16, 2010 · 229 comments

This month I was invited to attend a cupcake webinar hosted by David Arrick of New York’s Butch Bakery. Sponsored by Breville, the company that makes the tools David uses on a daily basis, David made cupcakes and shared his story of transitioning from his job as an attorney to a commercial cupcake baker who ships hundreds of cupcakes all over New York every day.

Hearing David’s story was inspiring, but I have to admit I was entranced by the fabulous stand mixer he was using in the demo. Obviously, it was a Breville, and David gave us a little background on the company

– Breville is huge in Australia where it was founded in Melbourne
– The name is a combination of its founders, Bill O’Brien and Harry Norville
– They value design and innovation
– Are sold in over 30 countries across the world, including the US where you’re likely to see Breville at upscale stores like Williams Sonoma and Sur le Table
– And finally, they design their products using consumer feedback as a guide.

Based on the fact that at the end of the webinar they gave a few of us stand mixers to review, that last point seems to be true. And furthermore, they’re giving away a stand mixer to a reader.
Thanks to Breville USA for being so generous, and I am so excited to be hosting this giveaway.

For your chance at receiving as mixer courtesy of Breville, please “Like” Breville on Facebook, then leave me a comment saying which (if any) of their products you own and what you like about Breville. If you don’t own a Breville product, tell me which one would be most useful. Deadline is midnight on Christmas Eve and I will notify the winner on Christmas day. This giveaway is limited to the USA.

Now I’ll tell you my thoughts about my new stand mixer, which arrived in the mail yesterday and which I took it out of the box and put it to work with a batch of Jenn’s Nutella Chocolate Chip Cookies.

The first thing I noticed was the sleek, modern, brushed stainless appearance. I like keeping my counters clean, but this mixer deserves a permanent spot on the island. It’s gorgeous. And despite the appearance, it’s actually a little lighter in weight than my other mixer.

Breville Stand Mixer

Next, thing I noticed was that it came with a scraper paddle. Remember how I’d talked about buying a side swipe or some type of $40 scraper attachment? No need with the Breville. There was also a whisk attachment, a heavy metal paddle and a dough hook. Naturally, I started with the scraper paddle which creamed a stick of very cold butter with ease.

As I creamed the butter and added in the sugar, (I am so in love with that scraper paddle!!!) I played with the little dial on the side of the mixer. Going from a creaming mode to aerating mode was kind of fun, but most importantly I felt like I had more control over the mixing speed. There are 12, and you can guide your mixer from the lowest (Knead) to the highest (Aerate) while watching your tasks light up on the LED. Being able to slowly ease up in speed rather than go from low to medium kept ingredients from flying, plus, I felt like the lowest speed was nice and slow and safe for mixing in dry ingredients without causing too much gluten formation.

breville base

The base has a little timer on it, which is pretty handy since a lot of recipes tell you how long you need to mix something. I don’t always pay attention to this, I think the digital display will keep me in check.

Tilt-Release. My personal preference has always been the tilt-release rather than the up and down bowl attachment. Adding ingredients was easy, and I didn’t have any problems with spilling. The mouth of the mixing bowl is nice and wide.

Breville Scraper Attachment

There were also other features such as internal cord storage, lift assist handles (which I appreciated more than I realized I would) and a 2 piece pouring shield (have yet to use)

And how were the cookies? Terrific! They sort of deserve their own post after all this mixer talk, but Jenn gave them one so I guess it’s okay ;) .

I don’t have any but I would LOVE that mixer with rubber scraper attachment. Genius!

I love my Breville juicer and have my eye on their espresso machine. I’ve not read anything about their stand mixer, but it looks fantastic. The timer on the side is really clever. I don’t think most people realize how long a minute is when you are standing at the mixer waiting for the first one to mix for 1 minute before adding the next! My cakes and cookies got much better once I started beating the ingredients longer.

I don’t have any breville products. I would love the mixer my 20 year old kitchenaid broke last year and I am not happy with the new kitchenaid product.

melissa December 20, 2010 at 9:30 pm

I don’t have any Breville products, but they look great ,and that mixer looks amazing!

Christine December 20, 2010 at 10:31 pm

I don’t own anything from Breville but am certainly interested in the mixer. It is sleek and that attachment with the scraper? Be still my heart!

Melissa December 20, 2010 at 10:41 pm

I like Breville on Facebook already, but I don’t yet have any of their products. I would LOVE the very mixer that you profiled and have my fingers crossed. =)

Andrea December 20, 2010 at 10:48 pm

I don’t own any Breville products, but that mixer would be awesome!

I don’t own any Breville products but have used the Breville espresso machine. I would love the Breville Stand Mixer because it is so useful!!

I don’t own any Breville products, but just saw this one with the scraper attachment used on Martha Stewart. One of my daughters and I spent Sunday baking cookies. We were so grateful for the dough hook attachments on our hand mixer, but it’s still tough. I told her Willow, this time next year, we will be using a stand mixer!

i don’t have any breville products, but after looking at a few and their great reviews, i would definitely consider buying one! the mixer looks awesome…plus it’s nice to see some competition for kitchenaid!

This was my first time hearing about a Breville. Thanks. That stand mixer with the scraper attachment is awesome.

Josie December 21, 2010 at 4:47 pm

I’ve never seen or heard of Breville before. Thanks for the info. They sound really nice. I like the tilt- release on the mixer rather than the up and down that I currently have. The stainless is beautiful!

Pam Shank December 21, 2010 at 9:47 pm

What an awesome looking mixer & by the way it looks beautiful in your great kitchen. I “Like” on FB. I do not own any of the products but would love to win the mixer for the first! Thanks

Oh I like the extra features on this. The timer is a brilliant idea! Its also nice that it comes with the scrapper paddle. Buying extra attachments at an inflated cost is frustrating.

Heather McNeally December 22, 2010 at 10:31 am

Oh how I love their products! My MIL has a coffee maker and toaster and I have an immersion blender by Breville. Absolutely spectacular! And aren’t scraper paddles the best?

Jess Sawyer December 22, 2010 at 11:45 am

Like Breville on FB. At the present time I do not own any Breville products. I have been researching stand mixers to replace my old one. I have been hearing only good things about the Breville Stand Mixer. So this is the one thing that I would love to have in my kitchen. I am trying to teach my son baking. That will help him with measuring and following directions. I love the fact that it comes with all of those attachments. Looks like it time to retire my old KitchenAid.

I have a Breville Rice Cooker and I just bought the Breville Smart Oven last night. I have owned the Rice Cooker for over a year and absolutely loved it. I did a lot of research before buying the Breville Smart Oven and couldn’t be happier with my purchase. I love the fact that I can make cookies, pizzas, breads, six slices of toast, and reheat all of my food as well. With six children and a husband in the military who frequently deploys the Smart Oven is a necessity for my home! It’s simple enough that my older children can use it, and with a family our size one oven is simply not enough, so the Smart Oven is the perfect second oven!

I hate not following directions but I don’t have a Facebook. Our Kitchenaid just broke so I’d have to say that the Breville stand mixer would be the most useful to us right now! But I’ve got to say there are many interesting and exciting products on their site.

Jan December 22, 2010 at 4:19 pm

I would love to have the stand mixer then I can return my son’s KA I “borrowed” 2yrs. ago LOL!

Sean December 23, 2010 at 10:05 am

I also don’t have Facebook :( The Smart Oven looks really cool! That’d be really useful for the summer, but I think the stand mixer would be the most useful year round. And the timer is so neat!

em December 23, 2010 at 11:42 am

I don’t have any of their products but they look wonderful. I would love to try the mixer and put it to good use after the holidays.

Jessica December 23, 2010 at 2:19 pm

I have never had a Breville appliance but I would LOVE a stand mixer. I had been saving up for a Kitchenaid but the feature set on the Breville stand mixer just blows me away! (As someone who hates scraping, the scrape attachment is just calling to me). I tweeted about this contest.

Sally December 23, 2010 at 4:23 pm

I have a Breville cordless hand blender that I recently got. I haven’t used it yet, but like the idea that it’s cordless. It also came with a whisk attachment, which I am looking forward to using.

Charles December 23, 2010 at 4:29 pm

I didn’t actually know there are stand mixers other than Kitchenaid out there so Breville was pretty clever to hold this giveaway! The Custom Loaf looks really interesting. So does the Personal Pie. And the Smart Oven. The stand mixer would be most useful, though!

Martha Collins December 23, 2010 at 10:18 pm

I don’t have any Breville appliances but would love a new stand mixer. I make cakes as a hobby so it would get lots of use making buttercream! Thanks for this give-away!

cindy December 23, 2010 at 11:21 pm

I’ve never heard of Breville till I saw this blog—I would love a stand up mixer.

TG December 24, 2010 at 12:00 am

Breville’s functionality is awesome but what I really like is the design. The gun metal gray feels streamlined, and makes you feel like you’re going to execute your recipe perfectly.

The stand mixer is the most appealing in their product line because of all the baking possibilities — but the juice fountain calls out because it’s more virtuous.
