Onyx Scale Giveaway from Scale Giant

by Anna on February 15, 2012 · 245 comments

UPDATE – The scale winner was Judy W. and she has been notified. Thanks to everyone for entering, and be on the look out for more giveaways. For those of you not sure what type of scale to buy (I read all the comments and that was a running theme), I recommend any basic digital scale that a) has grams and ounces b) uses an inexpensive battery or one that won’t wear out and c) is small enough so that you can keep it on the counter and use it.

—————————————————————————————————————————-

Yesterday I posted a vegan cookie recipe which uses weights instead of just volume.  Now I know a lot of you love weighing ingredients and I do too, but if you haven’t switched over or if you have and you’d like to convert a friend (in this case, by giving them your old one and keeping this baby!), take a shot at winning a kitchen scale provided by Scale Giant.  Scale Giant has all kinds of scales, but the one they’re so generously offering to one US based reader is the American Way Onyx Digital Scale, which they describe as “the sleekest and shiniest scale yet”.

Onyx Kitchen Scale

And sleek, it is!   It comes in nine colors, has touch-activated buttons built right into the weighing surface, includes fluid ounce/milliliter modes for liquid measurements, functions with four high precision G-Force load sensors, and comes with two lifelong lithium batteries. Frankly, I’m jealous of the winner already.

Today is Wednesday. I’m going to run this giveaway through Friday at midnight and will notify one lucky person this Saturday. For a chance to win this scale, please tell me either a) why you love weighing ingredients or b) why you haven’t yet bought yourself a kitchen scale.

It’s that easy. I hope you win, but if you don’t then keep checking back because I have a few more fun giveaways around the corner.

I’d love to begin weighing because I think it is a more accurate way to bake.

Heidi F. February 16, 2012 at 5:06 pm

I’ve wanted to try weighing my ingredients, but a scale isn’t in our budget right now.

Cindy B. February 16, 2012 at 5:12 pm

I love baking,… to be a better baker, you have to be exact on how you measure.

Stephanie February 16, 2012 at 5:16 pm

I have been eyeing one at Bed Bath and Beyond for awhile now…but BF will kill me if I bring another kitchen device home. However, if I win one, that’s a whole other story! Besides..these are small and slim, right?

Upstate NY Native February 16, 2012 at 5:27 pm

I would weigh if I had a scale, especially a RED one :-)
Thanks for the opportunity!

petra February 16, 2012 at 6:33 pm

I know that if I weigh ingredients and measure exactly, my recipes will turn out better. I’d definitely use a scale if I had one.

Allison W February 16, 2012 at 6:38 pm

Wow, what a great looking scale!

I use my scale only when I really need to weigh something. The only reason I don’t use it more is because the off button is broken and I need to remove the batteries to shut it off!

Emily February 16, 2012 at 6:45 pm

I would love a scale. I’m the type of OCD person that loves precision, especially for finicky things like baked goods, so a scale would be perfect.

Kathy February 16, 2012 at 6:48 pm

I confess, I don’t have a scale. The reason? Pure laziness!

Candace February 16, 2012 at 7:33 pm

I love weighing ingredients because then I don’t have to deal with washing measuring cups!

Anna February 16, 2012 at 8:02 pm

I haven’t bought a scale because for one I don’t know which one is the best to buy and two, I don’t have the money!

jacquie February 16, 2012 at 8:03 pm

nothing complicated – don’t have a scale because i can’t afford one.

Jenny February 16, 2012 at 8:13 pm

I only have a scale because my brother uses one… I use it when I bake to weigh my cookies! His has seen better days, so this will be great!!

Janetta February 16, 2012 at 8:29 pm

I don’t have a kitchen scale, because I can’t afford a good one!
The last one I had has seen better days..
These ones look great! I’m loving the white, teal and red :D

Karen February 16, 2012 at 8:40 pm

I would love to try a good quality scale for cooking. I have only used a scale to weigh out foods for weightloss. My very old scale from Weight Watchers dates back to about 1979. Do you think it is time for a new one? I love baking and think that it would be a new challenge to learn a different technique. My favorite “motto” is “learn something new every day.” Change is not something to be avoided.
This Onyx scale certainly looks state of the art!!!

suzanne February 16, 2012 at 8:48 pm

I use my scale daily to cook and bake. I would love a new one mine has seen better days.

Karin Muserallo February 16, 2012 at 8:57 pm

I like following bakers like Nigella Lawson from the UK and it would be so much easier to get an accurate weight with a scale like this! Isn’t it amazing how technology has touched everyday baking ! I have an old rickety scale from my commune days in the 80′s. It would be nice to have a sleek new one. :)

Susan February 16, 2012 at 9:42 pm

I have not yet bought a scale because I am just a few years out of college and just got an actual grown up size kitchen for the first time. Until I started making more complicated recipes I never realized how helpful it would be to make baked goods (like your Angel Food cupcakes, my family’s new obsession)!

Cynna February 16, 2012 at 10:13 pm

I’d love to have this chic scale in my kitchen. When I’m baking with chocolate, nuts, berries, etc.; a scale comes in very handy!
Thanks for a great blog!

Nancy February 16, 2012 at 10:53 pm

I have wanted a scale for some time, but always hesitated at how much the good quality ones cost. Maybe some day!

delia February 16, 2012 at 11:14 pm

I’ve always wanted a kitchen scale as a way to not measure out correct serving sizes but wasn’t sure if it was worth the investment. Would love to win one!

Laura February 17, 2012 at 4:46 am

Have you ever tested your measuring cups/spoons? Two rarely ever measure the same. I started using a scale when learning to make bread years ago. I love this method (I would treasure this scale) and tend to see out recipes that are already converted. Accurate measure is so important in baking.

Francesca February 17, 2012 at 6:24 am

I’ve actually never weighed baking ingredients, but would LOVE to begin baking that way. I’d like to see what a difference it makes in the finished product.

Anna February 17, 2012 at 7:30 am

I want a scale, but I’m not sure which is the best one to buy or really what features I’m even looking for. So instead of spending the money and being unhappy with a scale, I just haven’t bought one.

Maria February 17, 2012 at 9:54 am

I use my kitchen scale constantly!! I love it not only for baking, but also for keeping control over portion sizes. I bring a fruit and nut trail mix to work every day for a snack, and my scale makes it incredibly easy to portion out one serving (which I must do – I can’t be left alone with an open bag of trail mix!!). The scale has also been a lifesaver for baking. It allows more precise measurements (which translate into better goodies) and cuts a lot of time out of the baking process. I can’t imagine making something with peanut butter or honey without a scale. They really are a must have, and Anna, I have always appreciated you for putting the weights of ingredients on recipes – that is not always easy to find!!

ellen February 17, 2012 at 10:19 am

Weighing foods has been the key to my 110 pound weight loss! I also use it for measuring ingredients for cooking/baking. Mine is getting old and is looking less pretty than these scales though ;)

lorraine February 17, 2012 at 10:31 am

love weighing ingredients because its always more accurate..i also love to use scales for weighing my yarn..

Jodie B February 17, 2012 at 10:44 am

I have been wanting to get a scale for the last couple of years. So many bakers/cooks are using this system now. Would love to really start baking this way. Thank you for the opportunity and all of your great thoughts and ideas!

Elisabeth February 17, 2012 at 12:56 pm

Intimidated. I guess that is why I haven’t bought a scale. I don’t know what to buy and I have limped along without it. Seemingly successfully. But I am feeling more and more hampered by my reliance on measuring cups and really want to be able to see the differences you talk about, Anna, when you are able to be more exact. Also I feel as if I SHOULD know all about scales; I used to be a pro, but in the days when only Europeans used weights in their recipes. And now I am at a point where I am going to have to go back out into the world of professionals and things have changed….I need to work with weights!

Thanks, Anna.

J February 17, 2012 at 1:12 pm

I would love a scale b/c that way i could bake different things that i normally wouldn’t do. But being unemployed doesn’t bring in much money, so it will stay on my want list for now.

Martha T February 17, 2012 at 2:30 pm

Weighing ingredients is so much more precise than measuring. I have a scale that I purchased based on price and have regretted it ever since. This one would be an amazing addition to my baking life.

Monica February 17, 2012 at 2:44 pm

I don’t have a kitchen scale… yet. I recently read an article about them and was intrigued. I have added it to my (long) wish list of kitchen stuff to treat myself to… even if I really want something, I have a tendency to not treat myself, but rather others. I am trying to get better at showing myself some more love too. :-)

Gianna February 17, 2012 at 2:58 pm

I like weighing my ingredients because it’s more accurate for all the Italian recipes I use.

Chewthefat February 17, 2012 at 3:18 pm

I’m a bit ashamed to admit that I don’t have one because of the cost–I’ve had so many appliances break recently, that I didn’t want to buy a new one–still replacing the broken ones! However, I would love to have one for reasons of accuracy and to more easily make British recipes!

Shannon February 17, 2012 at 3:39 pm

I don’t have a scale yet because I haven’t felt like making the investment to buy a good one (but I know it’d be worth it!).

Patricia February 17, 2012 at 4:23 pm

I would like a kitchen scale because i have seen a lot of recipes that use grams instead of cups.

Renee February 17, 2012 at 5:01 pm

I would love to win a kitchen scale because I’m sure my baking would turn out just that much better.

Emily February 17, 2012 at 5:12 pm

I haven’t bought a scale yet because I’m a college student so the money I would love to put towards a decent kitchen scale has had to go towards books instead

Carol February 17, 2012 at 5:32 pm

I don’t love weighing ingredients, but I did get my husband to buy me a scale for Christmas 2010. I have only used it a few times. This looks nicer than the one I have!

Sally February 17, 2012 at 5:41 pm

Some recipes just turn out better if you weigh the ingredients like flour and other dry ingredients. I can’t believe that ONYX scale is only .6″ thick!

Amanda February 17, 2012 at 6:55 pm

I like weighing things when I bake because I find it to be much faster and accurate. However, most of my recipes, especially the older ones, don’t have measurements!

Sondra February 17, 2012 at 8:00 pm

I think weighing ingredients is more accurate. I wish more recipes listed weights.

Sally Copeland February 17, 2012 at 9:30 pm

I LOVE to weigh my ingredients because I know it is much more accurate than using cup measures. My mother-in-law lives in England and has one of the old scales with weights on one side and a container on the other and you have to make them balance to know our measurement. OK I’d like one of those for historical purposes but I’m all about ease and simplicity as well. These scales are beautiful and it would definitely be a centerpiece in my kitchen!

Carla February 17, 2012 at 9:54 pm

I love to way my bread dough so I get all the same size loafs…but my scale is needing an update!

Lauren February 17, 2012 at 10:16 pm

I love having a kitchen scale for baking, but also for dividing a 1 lb bag of pasta in half or for measuring out a pound of potatoes from a 5 lb bag!

Andrea Zeng February 18, 2012 at 3:09 am

I would love to win a scale. I have been meaning to buy one for a while now, but just haven’t found one that appeals to me. Having a scale would greatly expand my recipe selection, since so many other have discovered the persion of the scale.
