Onyx Scale Giveaway from Scale Giant

by Anna on February 15, 2012 · 245 comments

UPDATE – The scale winner was Judy W. and she has been notified. Thanks to everyone for entering, and be on the look out for more giveaways. For those of you not sure what type of scale to buy (I read all the comments and that was a running theme), I recommend any basic digital scale that a) has grams and ounces b) uses an inexpensive battery or one that won’t wear out and c) is small enough so that you can keep it on the counter and use it.

—————————————————————————————————————————-

Yesterday I posted a vegan cookie recipe which uses weights instead of just volume.  Now I know a lot of you love weighing ingredients and I do too, but if you haven’t switched over or if you have and you’d like to convert a friend (in this case, by giving them your old one and keeping this baby!), take a shot at winning a kitchen scale provided by Scale Giant.  Scale Giant has all kinds of scales, but the one they’re so generously offering to one US based reader is the American Way Onyx Digital Scale, which they describe as “the sleekest and shiniest scale yet”.

Onyx Kitchen Scale

And sleek, it is!   It comes in nine colors, has touch-activated buttons built right into the weighing surface, includes fluid ounce/milliliter modes for liquid measurements, functions with four high precision G-Force load sensors, and comes with two lifelong lithium batteries. Frankly, I’m jealous of the winner already.

Today is Wednesday. I’m going to run this giveaway through Friday at midnight and will notify one lucky person this Saturday. For a chance to win this scale, please tell me either a) why you love weighing ingredients or b) why you haven’t yet bought yourself a kitchen scale.

It’s that easy. I hope you win, but if you don’t then keep checking back because I have a few more fun giveaways around the corner.

I like weighing for more accurate baking recipes, and also to weigh portions to keep my on track diet-wise!

Janna February 16, 2012 at 9:49 am

I’ve always thought about getting a kitchen scale, but I have so many other kitchen gadgets, I’ve never bought one. I’d love to see what a difference it would make in my baking.

julie February 16, 2012 at 9:51 am

I haven’t bought one yet because I’ve reached the point at which I’m suspicious of new ventures requiring new equipment. However, my husband recently started Weight Watchers so I am considering it because it would serve his needs as well as mine.

Most recipes don’t specify what measuring method to use for flour – fluff and spoon? scoop directly from the bag? The volume of flour can vary significantly. SOOOO much easier with weight measurements. I confess that I already have a scale but I am eyeing up a new one; one of the buttons is wearing out; it doesn’t measure in g; and it’s capacity is low enough that I can’t use my large glass bowls on it because the scale is overloaded by the time I add a bowlful of ingredients.

Jennifer February 16, 2012 at 11:09 am

I love weighing ingredients for baking due to the ease and the precision. I love that it allows me to use less measuring cups and that I don’t have to deal with scooping, spooning, leveling or packing.

I do already own a food scale, however, one of the little “feet” came off, so I’m not sure how accurate it remains.

Elaine February 16, 2012 at 11:09 am

Haven’t had the time to buy one, but want to start using one so it is on my wish list!

Jill W February 16, 2012 at 11:11 am

I’ve been looking for kitchen scales since reading your blog, but just haven’t found a good selection in the stores, and then forget about it until the next time I’m baking something. These look awesome!

Jenna Z February 16, 2012 at 11:15 am

I am TERRIBLE at eyeballing portions! So I like weighing things so I can know an accurate calorie and protein/carb/fat count for my meals. :)

Renee W. February 16, 2012 at 11:31 am

I want one because weighing the ingredients makes a better product – or so I’ve heard! :)

manda February 16, 2012 at 11:46 am

I have recently started baking and would love a scale to help improve my measuring skills (part of the reason I was not great at baking was my lack of patience with measuring). The colorful scales are so cool!

Jennie February 16, 2012 at 11:47 am

I weigh my cookies so that the cooking time is consistent from cookie to cookie. I also weigh pans of cake batter to be sure the two layers cook the same length of time.

Jenn February 16, 2012 at 11:52 am

I don’t own one yet as I haven’t had time to research and then I always end up finding another kitchen gadget that takes priority. Would love to have one as I have heard baking only gets better by weighing everything.

Karey February 16, 2012 at 11:53 am

I don’t much about scales and haven’t taken the time to learn. But I would love to have one. I have so many recipes that use weights.

Christina February 16, 2012 at 11:57 am

I haven’t been able to buy a kitchen scale, but I’d love to get one!

Shelly February 16, 2012 at 12:03 pm

I have a very inexpensive scale that I use occasionally when I get a recipe from my English mother in law.

Natalie February 16, 2012 at 12:03 pm

I don’t have a scale yet, but I’ve always wondered how much it really does change the baking process!

mic February 16, 2012 at 12:04 pm

Weighing the ingredients takes the guesswork out of measuring.
127 grams are 127 grams. That simple!
Thank you, Anna!

Valerie February 16, 2012 at 12:05 pm

I’ve always been curious about cooking with a scale but never could justify the cost. I hope to win & see if a scale makes a difference!

Andrea February 16, 2012 at 12:07 pm

Have been wanting to bake using a scale – but my budget has no allowance for another kitchen gadget. Love the color selections!

Justin S February 16, 2012 at 12:09 pm

According to my recently broken mechanical kitchen scale, a cup of flour weighs roughly 3.5 pounds. It’s been in my family for a very long time, and I just can’t bring myself to replace it!

Natalie February 16, 2012 at 12:17 pm

I use a scale occasionally, but my frustration is that the one I have always automatically turns off within 1 minute or less! I can’t afford a new one right now!

sharona February 16, 2012 at 12:26 pm

it’s definitely in my amazon shopping cart but there are always new baking gadgets to buy and the scale seems to always be left off but i would love to have one!

Pam February 16, 2012 at 12:31 pm

IMHO, weighing ingredients is the only way to go! Less mess and more accuracy…

Diane February 16, 2012 at 12:41 pm

Yes I love weighing ingredients makes for a better finished product …my scale really needs replacing!

Mary Lynn February 16, 2012 at 12:53 pm

I have never used a scale. Would love to win and try it out.

Linda Owens February 16, 2012 at 1:13 pm

Weighing ingredients saves me the hassle of wahing measuring cups! So handy – especially when adding butter or shortening. I would LOVE a new sleek scale!

melinda February 16, 2012 at 1:15 pm

It is the best way to make a great pizza dough!

Kris P. February 16, 2012 at 1:15 pm

I have never weighed my ingredients because I don’t have a scale. I don’t have a lot of storage so I am deciding if it is a necessity for my kitchen.

Julie L February 16, 2012 at 1:21 pm

I haven’t used a food scale in umpteen years but need to thanks for the c hance

Noelle February 16, 2012 at 1:24 pm

I like weighing ingredients because it helps me make sure I am eating the correct serving size and makes it easy to log my food into My Fitness Pal.

Teresa February 16, 2012 at 1:53 pm

Love being able to make any recipe, whether measured in weight or volume. Would love to have one of these to give to my mom.

Patty February 16, 2012 at 2:02 pm

I don’t weigh the ingredients at home, because I tend to make just the old recipes that are measured by cups or teaspoons.

Suzanne Hickman February 16, 2012 at 2:12 pm

Have always thought I should have one, but never got around to buying one. These look like art however, and I think it would help my baking skills alot to use a scale to measure.

Christina February 16, 2012 at 2:19 pm

I think weighing ingredients for baking (e.g., flour, sugar) makes the recipe go faster. Rather than carefully scooping and leveling several cups of flour, you just have to pour exactly how much you need into the bowl.

Christina February 16, 2012 at 2:19 pm

I think weighing ingredients for baking (e.g., flour, sugar) makes the recipe go faster. Rather than carefully scooping and leveling several cups of flour, you just have to weigh out how much you need.

Jessi February 16, 2012 at 2:20 pm

Weighing ingredients is SO much more accurate…but I recently broke up with my boyfriends who’s mom was letting me use her scale and I haven’t gotten around to buying one myself yet!

Kathy February 16, 2012 at 2:30 pm

I know that weighing ingredients is the best way to go. In the last year I have had a $600 vet bill, an $1100 car radiator replacement, a $600 car starter replacement (after which the very trusted repair shop said the car was in great shape), then a smog check which ran the car at unbelievable RMPs, after which the car didn’t even make it to work the next day before the engine blew up. I then had to put down $2000 for a new(er) car, and then I had a $1600 emergency vet surgery for our beloved Cookie, and my son started college this semester. I had a savings pot, but it was blown about halfway through that. I really want a kitchen scale, but I haven’t been able to pony up for one.

Kim February 16, 2012 at 2:34 pm

I like weighing ingredients because it leaves less room for ever. I love cooking and when I do I’m a free spirit, but when I bake I’m like a mad scientist- baking for me is a delightful combination of science and personal idea.

Misty February 16, 2012 at 2:46 pm

I totalky need a new scale as I am currently using an old postage scale I borrowed from a friend years ago!

Melissa L. February 16, 2012 at 2:53 pm

I would LOVE to win this!!! I studied restaurant management in college and sophomore year had a professional cooking class where we did nothing but weigh everything! 11 years later I am still without a scale and after checking in here a few times a week and cleaning out my closet and finding my book from that professional cooking class and now seeing this contest I am hoping for the first time in my life I can actually win something! I am constantly baking…everything from breads to desserts and I want a nice scale but just recently I was laid off so I am watching everything I spend. I’ve never been in this situation before and it is frightening, restaurants are cutting back everywhere and everywhere I try to apply is either not hiring or you put in an application and never receive a phone call. I sometimes wish I could go back 11 years now to that cooking class where nothing mattered except weighing out my cake flour and making magic in the kitchen!

Gwen Howell February 16, 2012 at 2:54 pm

I have never used a scale for baking but would love to start because it is more precise!

Angie February 16, 2012 at 3:08 pm

I never thought it was important to weign ingredients…I used to just measure pretty hapzardly. I kept reading ( in magazines, baking books and on your website) how measuring accurately makes a huge difference and it does! The end product is always guaranteed and theres no biting your fingernails when you cut into a cake!!!

Andrea D. February 16, 2012 at 3:10 pm

I would love to win this so I could try baking with weighing my ingredients. Thanks for the chance to enter.

Meryl February 16, 2012 at 3:19 pm

Weighing ingredients is more accurate than measuring, and I prefer it for that reason.

Louis February 16, 2012 at 3:19 pm

I don’t have a kitchen scale, and this one sounds great.

Shannon February 16, 2012 at 3:23 pm

It is so much easier to bake by weight!

Savannah February 16, 2012 at 3:28 pm

I love weighing ingredients because you have a better chance of everything coming out more accurate. Also, it helps when you’re modifying recipes! I have a scale at the moment, but it seems to always be on the fritz, and this one looks just lovely! Thanks!

Cookies4kids February 16, 2012 at 3:33 pm

It has only been in the last ten years that I have had a kitchen scale, and it is something that I could not do without. All my layer cakes are even these days. My breads turn out to be the same size, and everything I bake is more accurate. I wish I would have had it for all the years that I have been baking. If you don’t have one—go get one!!!

Jennifer February 16, 2012 at 4:23 pm

I want to start weighing ingredients, but just haven’t had time or extra $ in the kitchen tools budget lately. It is definitely on the list though!

Robyn February 16, 2012 at 4:37 pm

Holy cow. That’s the coolest kitchen scale I’ve ever seen. I’ve used a kitchen scale for at least two decades. I do a lot of cooking from European recipes so I need weights. I also like to weigh flour for baking for more exact measurements. I also use my kitchen scale to weigh letters for postage. I don’t know how anyone lives without one!
