Cookbook Giveaway!

The holidays are coming, and Hachette Book Group is spreading some cheer by gifting three lucky readers with a set of two fabulous new cookbooks – How to Roast a Lamb and A Love Affair With Chocolate. Having done a little research, I can tell you this is a very generous giveaway.

The first book, How to Roast a Lamb, is by the great Barbara Kafka and superstar Greek chef Michael Psilakis. Along with colorful photos and personal essays, the book is a collection of recipes described as “healthy, user-friendly and affordable”. This is my kind of cookbook.

The second book in the set is Chocolate A Love Story which includes 65 recipes from Max Brenner’s private collection. If you’re a fan of the famous Max Brenner Chocolate Shop in New York or would like to experience it vicariously through the book, here’s your chance.

For a shot at the books, just write a comment telling me what kind of dessert you are serving at Thanksgiving. I will pick three comments, and as usual it will be by a random drawing.

I will draw winners on Monday — November 16 at noon, so any comments left after that will not be in eligible. Good luck!

Hummingbird cake, pecan pie and my MeeMaw’s secret recipe jello salad!

  2. Donna R says:

I’m serving Yvonne’s Apple Cake … a wonderful recipe I found on http://www.twopeasinabucket.com. I’m also serving a generational recipe called “Grandpa’s Raisin Cake.” The funny thing about this cake is that over the years we’ve modified it … now it doesn’t have raisins at all … but it’s still called “Grandpa’s Raisin Cake!”

  3. Muffy says:

My ancestors settled in the northeast (MA, CT, NY) in the 1600s -not on the Mayflower, the next boat, after the condos were built! Although I have lived in the southwest for almost 20 years, with such a heritage, Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday; and to me the most important.

I will be making Indian Pudding, a very old New England traditional dessert. It’s a sort of rich, sweet custard, with lots of spices, molasses and corn meal. The corn meal, formerly known as Indian meal, is where the dish gets its name. Sometimes it’s also called “Heaven & Hell,” because it is served hot with vanilla ice cream on top.

You can take the girl out of New England, but you can’t take New England out of the girl!

  4. Karey says:

I usually fix fudgey pecan cake. I think it is a hershey recipe. One of my sons likes dutch apple pie, but I have lost my recipe after doing alot of research to find it early 2000’s. However I have made an apple custard tart. (don’t know if I can find it either-it was a pillsbury)
    Good luck everyone!

  5. kenita lynn says:

Chocolate cream pie with double meringue is a must at Thanksgiving, and I think I am going to try the mini vanilla pound cake recipe I saw on the bake or break blog. I always like to try something new!

  6. Tonya says:

Marcel DeSaulnier’s Butterscotch Walnut Pumpkin Layer Cake: Alternating layers of walnut and pumpkin cake with a butterscotch walnut filling and a creamy brown sugar frosting. Served with a hot glass of apple cider, this cake is to die for and well worth the extra effort!!

  7. Bunners says:

I’ll be making at least three or four pies this year – apple, pumpkin, lemon pecan, apple blueberry and maybe huckleberry, if I can get fresh hucks. :) My grandmother will make her mincemeat pie, and grandpa will probably bring a cheesecake. What’s the point of Thanksgiving if you don’t have a ton of desserts?

  8. Aly says:

Pumpkin pie (of course) and an oh-so-wrong chocolate chocolate chocolate cake!

  9. magnolia pulaski says:

I am making my mother’s pumpkin chiffon pie and our family coconut birthday cake which is a special (if odd) request.

  10. Kim says:

I am always responsible for making a labor-intensive White Chocolate Cherry cheesecake for my former boss. His birthday is always during Thanksgiving week. I bring the cheesecake to Thanksgiving dinner, but he never shares ANY of it. He hides it and eats the whole thing himself!

I also plan on making the recipe for the marbled cream cheese pumpkin pie you posted the other day. It looks deeee-lish!

  11. Lisa says:

I’m making pumpkin flan (it’s a Gourmet recipe — fabulous) and an apple-cranberry tart!

  12. Tonya says:

In addition to a Butterscotch Walnut Pumpkin Layer Cake, I like to start the afternoon off early with an appetizer of fresh apple slices, cubes of yellow cheddar cheese, toasted walnuts, and Big, Chewy Ginger Cookies and hot spiced apple cider. Late night desserts include the traditional Pumpkin Cheese Pie and a just out of the oven Gingerbread served with warm lemon curd sauce…Delish…I can already taste Thanksgiving!!

  13. Tee says:

I will be making a chocolate chip Trifle! Homemade chocolate chip cake, with chocolate ganache, caramel sauce and chocolate chips, and of course the chocolate and vanilla puddings all topped with some homemade whipped topping and probably some heath bar crunches and broken up crispy choco chip cookies for texture… I love making this!!

  14. So far I know I will be serving pumpkin pie (my husbands favorite). I am still trying to decide on a second dessert. I need to come up with something else for the guys as it will be my husband + about 8 single soldiers coming over for dinner.

  15. Lyssa says:

I’m serving Pecan Pie and Pumpkin Pie for the sugar/carb eaters. My mom has been on Atkins for about 7 months and is doing great with it. I will be making a low carb cheesecake for her to enjoy this holiday.

  16. Anna says:

Apple Pie in a paper bag, pumpkin cheesecake bars, and a chocolate blackout cake. Yum!

  17. Cindy LeBlanc says:

We celebrate at my mom’s and she makes all kinds of pies. Pumpkin, pecan, chocolate, lemon meringue, apple….all from scratch, and all delicious! Every year, however, my son wants to help make a cherry pie and bring it along. I guess there can never be too much pie!

  18. Mary Allman says:

Raspberry Pie, Pumpkin cheesecake and something chocolate? Not sure which recipe to use, too many good ones. Happy Thanksgiving!

  19. Jayna says:

I plan on bringing chocolate chip pumpkin bread to my family’s celebration!

  20. V says:

We have Thanksgiving a month before, in canada! But I made pumpkin pie. And then I made a crustless pumpkin pie for myself b/c I mostly just like the filling anyways…=)

We also had cranberry coconut squares and oatmeal raisin cookies!

  21. Adare says:

We are having a pumpkin/pecan pie and an apple/cranberry pie!

  22. Kim says:

I’m making an apple pie (a recipe I’ve been working on perfecting all fall) and, by popular demand, a pumpkin pie cake.

  23. Gloria says:

I already posted here, but I want to know what Anna is making for Thanksgiving?

  24. Angelica Macklin says:

Good ol’ pecan pie and a caramel apple pie.

  25. Gwen says:

I will probably be making the tex-mex chocolate cookies you posted here a while back. They’ve become one of my favorite cookies, and I’m not a fan of traditional thanksgiving desserts, so I always like to bring something a bit different.

  26. Jen says:

Aside from the requisite pumpkin pie, I was also planning on making a chocolate silk pie/tart with peanut butter caramal topping but the post about indian pudding has me feeling nostalgic (grew up in massachusetts!) and now I might add that to the list!

  27. Piroska says:

Pumpkin Cheesecake…and Apple Crumble Pie. Yummy.
    :o )

  28. Emily says:

Mmmm. Thanksgiving desserts. What to bake, what to bake.
I think we’re looking at pumpkin-chocolate brownies, caramel apple crisp, a cheesecake of some variety, and chocolate silk-pistachio pie. Pudding cake is on the list of maybes.
It’s refreshing to know my family isn’t the only with an overwhelming knack for desserts.

  29. Hannah says:

For Thanksgiving I have not yet made any desserts, but I am hoping for a chance to make the delicious apple pie that my dad usually makes, but for now he is still in charge of it! Or, maybe this year I’ll make something new to start a new tradition.

  30. Heidi says:

Thanksgiving desserts bring memories of pecan pie and apple desserts. My favorite apple dessert is from my German Grandma who lives in Minnesota. It’s a simple apple crisp – it’s lovely heated with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

  31. Mike Wascher says:

Gotta have pumpkin pie — always! For something lighter, with coffee in the morning or tea late in the evening, cranberry bread.

  32. Debbie says:

    Pumpkin pie of course! :)

  33. Sarah says:

My mom is usually in charge of the pies, so I’ll be making finger-foody desserts for our relatives to munch on– some pumpkin bars and possibly banana bread.

  34. Mel says:

This year I am going to try a new recipe (found at http://domesticgoddessadventures.blogspot.com/2009/10/red-velvet-white-chocolate-cheesecake.html) for red velvet white chocolate cheesecake as well as the old traditionals of pecan pie, pumkin pie, cheesecake and brownies :)

  35. Kim says:

A while back I found an excellent recipe for an Apple cardamon cake that is lovely. It is a nice accent to a traditional Thanksgiving feast in addition to pumpkin pie. I couldn’t think of a better way to use apples from a wonderful harvest. – happy baking!

  36. MackenzieS says:

The usual pumpkin pie and apple pie :)

  37. Emily380 says:

This year several of my family members are worried about gaining weight. So, I’ve decided to forgo pie crust all together, and make a lightly sweetened apple crisp with a whole grain topping. Hopefully, that will satify the sweet tooth without the over indulgence. And, it’s seasonal!

  38. I will make an”Old Fashioned Stack Apple Cake” The cake batter has the aroma of spices with the taste of Gingerbread and has a filling of applesauce between layers. This recipe dates back to the early 1800’s. My Grandmother Turner made it many times.

  39. cindy says:

    Pecan Pie!

I’m making Maple Pumpkin Pie and Carrot Cake. YUM!

  47. Midohioguy says:

I will be making three tasty scrumptious treats that will make any adult/ child sit back relax and enjoy thanksgiving.

These tasty treats remind me of the days growing up in a cold northern state and cooking with my grand mother prior to strapping on my skates and skating out on the pond.

I will be making home made Peanut butter balls a crunchy extremely delicious treat, a new version of black and white cookies that takes an interesting spin on the cookie and home made pecan fudge.

  48. Brooke says:
