Easy-Bake

You know you’ve hit an all-time baking low when you ruin an Easy-Bake Oven cake.

What happened was, we had the late afternoon blahs and decided to pull the Easy-Bake oven out of the closet. We hadn’t played with it in over a year, but there were still two mixes left — a yellow cake and a chocolate frosting. The manufacturer must have mislabeled the mix, because after adding the 3 teaspoons of water to the powder, it was thick and doughy — not thin like cake batter. There wasn’t enough to cover the whole pan, and Fuzz was a bit frustrated with this. “Don’t worry.” I said, “It will rise and spread to the ends.” She put it in the oven and we waited 12 minutes.

So I think this was cookie mix disguised as cake mix and those sugar cookies we made last year were cake mix cookies. No wonder they were so weird tasting.

Or maybe I’m just jinxed and should stop baking for a day.

At least she’s getting used to an occassional failure.

I LOVE Emma’s t-shirt!!! She has all the best stuff – bouncy house, Easy Bake Oven, halloween kitty shirt…

If you ever consider adoption, I’m available.

TG, I don’t know if it’s the drizzling sauce. I think maybe there are a lot of closet pumpkin-aholics.

Peabody, my mother wouldn’t buy me one.

Gigi,I will adopt you. Fuzz needs a big sister, so let’s get some paperwork going. There’s a witch-cat t-shirt here with your name on it…in sequins.

My younger son has the Easy Bake oven and he’s constantly pestering me to use it. It’s possible that your mixes were mislabled, but in general the Easy Bake mixes are barely edible. We often have to add extra water.

Maybe that could be your next project — come up with a cookie recipe that really works in an Easy Bake Oven! You’d be doing the world a big service.

    Anna,
My girls love their Easy Bake Oven, but I vetoed the mixes pretty quickly. They are overpriced and foul. I bought a cookbook of recipes scaled to the Easy Bake Oven and we’ve had some fun with it. Although the book seems to have been self published and DESPERATELY needs a good editor, what we’ve made so far has been yummy. Let me know if you’d like to borrow it. I’ll bet you could go to town once you’ve figured out the ingredients ratios that work. . .

Try the Easy-bake Oven Gourmet cookbook. It’s available on Amazon.
I don’t know who was more intrigued, me and my F&B friends or the kids.
