“Mama, I found a snake.”
That’s how our day started. Fuzz went to the door to get her backpack and shoes, where she found a young reptile relaxing on the cool tile by the front door. Fuzz was remarkably calm and thought perhaps it was a toy. Snakes are very still and creepy like that, you know. Had she been a more impulsive child, she might have picked it up and tried to play with it. But we have a “no snake toys allowed” rule in this house because no one likes them, especially Todd.
And that’s putting it mildly.
Click here only if you’d like to see a picture of the snake. (Update: I removed the link because it was too terrifying).
As for this guy. He sat on the couch the whole time and did nothing. I’m kind of glad, actually. I don’t want any of my babies playing with snakes. However, me may need to get an outdoor cat specifically for snake hunting….or a mongoose.

We’ve had 2 snakes in our house. One was in the rollers of our vacuum cleaner. (figure that out) and the other was behind our tv in the den. Both scared us to death but lived to slither away. Our cats do go in and out and we have not had a snake in the house in years. Jancd
Hi Jan,
Maybe we should get 10 new cats for the outside?
Seriously, I guess an indoor/outdoor situation is ideal, but our cats are strictly indoor cats and introducing and indoor/outdoor addition toe the household probably wouldn’t work. There are a few feral cats in the neighborhood. They’d better get to work!
My husband lovingly told me about a green garden snake in our honeysuckle very near to the grill. I could have lived my whole life not knowing that little detail. After the bat I found in our patio umbrella, it was too much. And I live in the fricking burbs!
Our cat is indoor/outdoor but would only run and hide from a snake.
so anyway – I clicked on the snake link and no picture??? I want to be impressed. 😉
Heidi,
You sound like Todd. He doesn’t like hearing about snakes or knowing they are there. This morning was either a break-through or a trauma. We’ll see.
Here’s the picture. I was having problems with the my blog earlier and couldn’t get the link to work. Now it does.

I would’ve died! My hubby told me he found a small snake in the side yard of our house about 5 years ago. I haven’t ventured into the side yard since.
Looks like what you had there was a baby rat snake. They’re harmless and will keep rats and mice and other assorted pests down if you let it stay. Of course, I’d rather have the rats and mice and other assorted pests.
Oh no ma’am! YIKES!
that’s a domesticated animal for you. my cat seems unwilling to chase anything unless it has a pink feather or a bell, and will ignore every rotten bug in the house
We live in Kansas. A year or so ago two of my sons and I had been playing outside the front door, after coming inside one of them pointed to the front door, where there are two slender windows and asked what that was. I looked over and saw a snake looking in our house. Now this was not just a little baby snake, this was a good four feet long about two inches wide. It slithered from one window to the next and looked in each window. It had been hiding behind a planter pot. I was freaking out. I called my husband at work, he thought my reaction was quite funny as I was pretty hysterical, even though the snake was outside and we were inside. I then called animal control where they were pretty rude to me about how this is the snakes habitat, too, and no they would not remove the snake from our property. I was concerned because I didn’t even know what kind it was. It was all black. Animal Control did agree to come out and look at it and tell me what kind it was. By the time they got there, the snake was leaving. We went outside to watch where he was going, but stayed a good distance away! It happily slithered its way through my flower bed, up the garden hose and on to a ledge on the house. Animal Control came just in time to tell me it was a black snake or a rat snake. It made its way into a rock bed on the side of the house. The lady said we should be happy that we have a snake eating all our mice for us. I took lots of pictures. Many probably already know, but I do NOT like snakes, so I didn’t know, that black snakes are not poisonous and do not even have fangs, they just eat small rodents. We never saw the snake before that and haven’t since, and I’m perfectly fine with that. I don’t go by the irises anymore!
Thanks for sharing your snake story. (We’ve also had a little tiny green garter snake in our storage room in the basement, stuck to a sticky trap for spiders. This one was beyond sustaining any kind of life after being unstuck. My husband had to “put him to sleep” and for that little guy I actually felt really bad–still don’t want them in my house!)
Anna, do you know (it may be easy to find out, I just haven’t looked) when the Bake-Off will air? Thanks! Looking forward to reading the blogs about it.
P. S. Love the cat picture! And sorry my story ended up being so long.
Thank you for having the sensitivity to make that snake photo optional viewing! I kinda have reptile issues (hated even typing that) and have unsuspectingly run into WAY too many blog pics lately from those who find them cute or whatever … who needs those nightmares?
When I was younger, my mom and I used to catch the snakes that we found in our yard and keep them as pets!
Oh my goodness! That freaks me out. I clicked on the picture…what kind of snake is that? It looks dangerous. I would have started screaming.
Thanks for all the stories. I’ve enjoyed them.
I’m pretty certain it was a rat snake. On one hand, I’m glad he was there to kill any rats. On the other, I don’t want him back in the house.
That looks like a big snake to me! I would have run screaming. Fuzz is super brave!
What is it about men and snakes? My ex-boyfriend had a severe phobia of them, and I thought it was just him. Then, come to find out Scott has a phobia of them as well! Don’t get me wrong, I don’t like them either, but I don’t get all freaked out to the same extent.
The dog and I came across one yesterday while out on a morning walk. Luckily, it wasn’t a rattler, and the dog is not snake-phobic at all.
I HATE SNAKES!!!
Other words you do not want to hear…..I’m Sorry Mom! It just slipped!” “It” being a large plastic container of spaghetti sauce and meatballs all over the back seat and floor of my car………
Waiting with baited breath for PBO!!!
Auuughh! I hate snakes, I just hate them. Fuzz is a brave girl. I would have been in hysterics had I found that!
My husband finds little garden snakes curled up on the chlorine floaters in our pool (something I could have lived my whole life not knowing). I wish they would just fall off and drown. We’ve found two little snakes so far this year in the yard. I don’t dig in the beds without gloves, and I only work in the beds in bright sunlight!
HOLY COW. That first picture made me want to run and scream. That second one put it in perspective, thank goodness. The color would have made me want to run and scream.
