Chocolate Banana Oreo Brownies

Banana Oreo Brownies are another variation on these state fair winning brownies made with mashed banana. I really love that recipe (though I didn't think I would!) and felt like playing with it a bit by adding broken cookies.

Oreos are good by themselves, but they happen to be a fun baking ingredient these days. Plus Nabisco keeps coming out with so many new flavors, you can mix and match. For the banana brownies I just used regular Oreos, but they might be fun to try with peanut butter or another flavor. Or you can use the Halloween colored Oreos (which I seem to be obsessed with) and make desserts look spooky!

I chilled the brownies before slicing, so they look fudgy. They're definitely fully cooked, though.

Chocolate Banana Oreo Brownies are fudgy brownies with nuts, chips and chunks of Oreo mixed in.

Ingredients
 

  • ¾ cup sifted flour
  • 1 T unsweetened natural cocoa powder
  • ¼ teaspoon salt if using unsalted butter, add an extra pinch
  • 1 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • ½ of a small banana-well mashed
  • 5 oz semisweet chocolate chopped (or a little less that 1 cup chips)
  • 1 oz bittersweet chocolate chopped (or 3 tablespoons chips)
  • 6 tablespoons salted butter
  • ½ t vanilla optional – Gloria leaves it out, anna added ½ tsp
  • ½ cup semi sweet chocolate chips
  • ½ cup lightly toasted chopped pecans
  • Broken Oreos -- however many you want

Instructions
 

  • Preheat oven to 325 degrees F. Line an 8 inch square metal pan with nonstick foil.
  • Mix flour, cocoa, and salt together and set aside.
  • Combine sugar, eggs, and banana in a separate bowl and beat combined.
  • Melt butter in a saucepan over medium low heat, then reduced heat to low and add 5 oz and 1 oz of chocolates. Cook and stir over low until smooth. Cool 5 minutes.
  • Add melted chocolate to sugar egg/banana mixture-stir until combined. Stir in the dry ingredients.
  • Fold in that last ½ cup chips and nuts. Add the Oreos.
  • Spread in the pan and bake 35-40 min, check at 35 (Anna’s note: I baked a full 45 min)
  • Chill for several hours (for ease of slicing), then lift from pan and cut into squares.
  • Yield: Obviously, this makes 1 8 inch pan. How many brownies you get is up to you. I cut mine into 9 giant squares, but if you chill the brownies before slicing, you should be able to cut the brownies as small as you’d like. You might even want to try cutting 36 squares and serving them in mini cupcake holders.

    wow...very unique, and I like all of the components. Have made your oreo "cookies in cookies" several times with much praise. (can't remember their real name, from several years ago.

    These brownies look wonderful. I read Katrina's request for a banana flavored Oreo at 4 AM this morning and immediately thought "artificial banana flavored Oreos, BLAH". I still have the taste image and it's not good. 🙁

    I am on vacation in Maine right now (burning calories on a bike trip, so I can eat more cookies), but I'm going to try these with the peanut butter double-stuff oreos when I get home. These look fabulous!

    I've said it before (maybe not to you), but I think with all the fun filling flavors Oreos got, they need a banana flavored one! I would like it.

    Carrie, if you hate bananas then it's not okay. If you like bananas, then it's delicious! It's a brownie with banana flavor.

    You have been busy! Those brownies have a whimsical look and will be tasty and fun to eat! I may change my mind about Oreos straight up! The halloween idea is genius!!! Too bad parents won't let kids trick or treat for home made food anymore-but for an office party they will be great!

    I like the Halloween idea! Is the banana really OK in these? I have to be honest, the idea of banana in a brownie scares me...I guess I'll have to try them and see 🙂
