Life is like a pan of Candy Bar Brownies. It's full of surprises. In this case, it's a surprise candy in every bite. This recipe is an old favorite adapted from a Forrest Gump themed cookbook originally published by Oxmoor House and Southern Living. Given that, it's no surprise that these brownies and other recipes from the book are actually really good!

Chewy Brownies with Snickers
What I love about this recipe is how useful it is for those of us hedging our bets on trick-or-treaters and not sure what candy to buy. This recipe makes it easy. Just go for Snickers or any candy you wouldn't mind tossing into a batch of Candy Bar Brownies. And be sure to get some mini Hershey's to melt on top. At this point you're going to be hoping those kids don't come.

Melted Candy Bar Topping
So yes, the Snickers and chewy bars go in the batter and the Hershey's go on top. You can use with plain Hershey's or mix things up a bit and use assorted Hershey's Miniatures. I did this for my last batch thinking it would make the brownies more awesome, but I'm not sure having a bit of Krackle and Mr. Goodbar along for the ride did much. Everything melts together in the end.

Candy Bar Brownies Tricks
Another thing I like to to with these brownies is line the bottom of the pan with a square of parchment, then grease both sides of the parchment with coconut oil. This gives the brownies a hint of coconut flavor. It's almost like you hid a Mounds or Almond Joy in them. Or maybe you did. If you're using candy from your own child's haul, chances are there's a coconut candy or two.
Serving and Storing Candy Bar Brownies
These are super simple and very tasty. They're also much easier to deal with after being chilled, so definitely chill before cutting and store in either the refrigerator or the freezer.
Recipe

Candy Bar Brownies
Ingredients
- 2 large eggs
- 1 cup granulated sugar (200 grams)
- 6 tablespoon unsalted butter, melted and cooled (84 grams)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- ¾ cup all-purpose flour (95 grams)
- ¼ teaspoon baking powder
- ¼ teaspoon plus ⅛ teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons plus 2 teaspoons unsweetened natural cocoa powder (18-20 grams)
- 4 to 5 oz Snickers candy bars cut into chunks plus more if needed
- 3 to 4 oz Hershey's chocolate bars chopped or unwrapped miniatures
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease an 8-inch square metal pan and line with a piece of parchment paper. Grease the parchment. Melted Snickers are sticky.
- Whisk together the eggs, sugar, melted butter and vanilla.
- Combine flour, baking powder, salt and cocoa powder; stir into sugar mixture. Fold in chopped Snickers
- Spoon mixture into pan and bake at 350° for about 25-28 minutes (check as early as 22) or until the brownies appear set.
- Remove pan from oven and immediately sprinkle top with chopped milk chocolate bars or miniature bars. Also, scatter on extra chopped Snickers. Set a sheet pan over the brownie pan to lock in some of the heat and help the chocolate melt.
- Let cool at room temperature until the pan is cool enough not to warm up the refrigerator, then chill thoroughly. When chilled, lift from the pan and cut into squares.

Hi Debbie,
The general rule for subbing a glass pan is to reduce the heat by 25 degrees. So you'd do everything the same, but cook at 325 F and take the brownies out when they seem done.
Debbie says
Would using a glass pan vary the cooking time at all? I don't have a metal pan.

I am going to make these for hubby - his two favorites, brownies and Snickers.
I was at Michaels today and noticed that Wilton is now selling a spatula for brownies..cause you know a regular spatula just won't do! I just brownies are the new cupcakes and WIlton is starting the trend.

Anna, Thank you for the nice introduction. I'll try to live up to it. 🙂 I hope you enjoyed the brownies. Nice photo. Last week I found a recipe on the web that I want to make -- "Bacon Bourbon Brownies" aka "Legal Vice Brownies". Maybe I'll do them tomorrow so I can take them to class.

Now THOSE are beyond enticing.

Yum-meh! Can't wait to do this with brownies some day. So my black bean brownies with candy bars??? That kind of defeats the purpose, right? These look like a perfect "splurge" brownie, or one that the hubbies would love for Valentine's day!
