Brownie Mix Truffle Brownies, also known as Truffle-Top Brownies, is an old recipe that combines boxed brownie mix with a fudge topping made of condensed milk and chocolate chips. I am embarrassed by my old photo and will post a new one soon. The brownies are going to look different based on what brand of brownie mix one uses. The original recipe just called for a 19.5 box. All of the package sizes have changed, but you can use any brand.

Brownies With Fudge on Top

Since brownie mix comes in so many different brands and sizes, it's usually best to follow the directions on the package for making the base brownies, then use the instructions from the recipe for the enhancement. The enhancement here is a "truffle topping" of melted chocolate chips and condensed milk. So the brownies are like fudge brownies with fudge on top.

8-Inch Pan Size Truffle-Topped Brownies

This recipe is also a good way to use half a can of condensed milk. Just make the brownies in an 8-inch pan using directions on the box. Use half a can of condensed milk and 1 cup of chocolate chips of the topping.

Truffle-Topped Brownies

1 (19.5 to 19.8 oz) package brownie mix
Eggs, oil, butter or water as indicated on the box
1 (14 oz) can condensed milk
1 (12 oz) bag chocolate chips (semi-sweet or maybe try bittersweet)
2 teaspoons vanilla

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Spray a shiny 13x9 inch metal baking pan with cooking spray (bottom only). If you are using a dark pan, preheat the oven to 325 degrees F.

In a mixing bowl, stir together brownie mix, butter, eggs and water until well-moistened. Pour into pan and bake for 28-30 minutes.

During last 5 to 10 minutes of baking, start preparing topping. Cook condensed milk and chocolate chips together in a saucepan over medium-low to medium heat. Stir to melt chips, then remove from heat and stir in vanilla.

Remove brownies from oven and immediately spread topping over brownies. Set the pan on a rack and let them cool completely, then transfer to the refrigerator and chill for an hour to set topping. Cut into bars.

Brownie Mix Bliss

This is just one of many things you can do with packaged brownie mix. If you love recipes like this, you may want to grab a copy of Brownie Mix Bliss by Camilla Saulsbury. It's one of her older books and the recipes will need to be altered slightly to deal with the change of brownie box sizes, but the book is a nice collection of classics tested perfected by Camilla with her usual lovely headnotes.

Fun and easy recipe. Brownies in the oven now.

If so inclined, you can spread the topping on from scratch brownies. But why bother in an unairconditioned kitchen.
