Top Chef Just Desserts Episode 3

by Anna on September 30, 2010 · 15 comments

Last night I watched the third episode of Top Chef Just Desserts and am happy to say that it has redeemed itself from Episode #2. There have been lots of great recaps of #2, but my personal take on Seth’s breakdown is that it was hard to watch. Unlike most reality TV which seems about as genuine and real as World Wide Wrestling, last week’s meltdown was a truly sad personal breakdown that was not edited out. It was unsettling, but I reminded myself that this was filmed long ago and figured things would get better and there was a reason this scene was left in. I feel sorry for Seth who had to watch it on national TV and re-live it, but I guess that’s the way it goes when you agree to be a contestant on one of these shows.

Layered Pumpkin Cheesecake Brownies

by Anna on September 29, 2010 · 43 comments

pumpkin swirl brownies

We really enjoyed David Lebovitz’s cream cheese brownie recipe and I will definitely make them again, but I had to test another idea. I wanted something seasonal, so instead of plain cheesecake swirled through brownies, I buried pumpkin cheesecake in the brownies. They’re still marbled on top, but because there’s almost a full bite of pumpkin cheesecake in every brownies, I decided to call them “layered” instead of “marbled”.

Great Coconut Cream Pie

by Anna on September 28, 2010 · 18 comments

coconut cream pie

Three years ago I made my first coconut cream pie. It went over so well that I continued to make it on and off for the next few years, testing and tasting new recipes. The first one was excellent, the second one was even better, and this pie I made yesterday was also worth posting. It [...]

More Cream Cheese Brownies

Cream Cheese Brownies

This week I baked a batch of cream cheese brownies. They weren’t that bad, but I knew I could do better. I wanted a brownie with a cream cheese topping that wouldn’t sink to the bottom, wasn’t too stiff and eggy, and had a little tartness. After asking for a few recipe recommendations, I put together [...]

Hungarian Noodle Casserole

by Anna on September 26, 2010 · 8 comments

Hungarian Noodle Casserole

I don’t post a lot of savory dishes, but this week I tried one that was just too good not to share. The recipe is called “Hungarian Noodle Casserole” and it’s from the Junior League of Palo Alto’s Private Collection. At first glance, it looks like your typical Noodles Romanov/Hungarian Noodle type dish, but I think the Junior League of Palo Alto got the spices just right. The flavors and textures were perfectly balanced and made a great side dish to lean roast beef. I suppose it might also work as an entrée with a little parmesan cheese and side of vegetables, but I liked it as a side.
