Double Decker Halloween M&M Brownies

I swiped this recipe off the M&M site and made some spooky changes. Instead of M&M’s Baking Bits, I used Halloween colored M&M’s. Since those are a little sweeter, I just put them on top and threw some extra chocolate chips inside the batter where the semi-sweet M&M’s Baking Bits would have been if I’d used them.

BTW. The M&M website has quite a few good recipes which should come in handy now OR after Halloween when your children (or you, if you are child or childish) have lots of bags of M&M’s. I’ve decided to go trick or treating this year so I can get more chocolate for baking.

Preheat oven to what degrees? They look so cute! I didn’t know M&Ms had added the purple and green to their Halloween colors. I approve!

  2. Patti says:

After clicking through on the recipe link I see that the oven temp is 375 degrees. Great!

  3. Anna says:

Smart of you to click, but I used 350!

  4. Robin says:

Great idea! I am already only buying candy that can be used in baking, in case I have any left. but to go trick or treating just to feed our baking jones……brilliant.

Anna… you forgot to mention how these turned out? How would you rate them? Did you like their taste?

They look yummy and I love the idea of finding some recipes for using up all the post-Halloween chocolate. I found some good ones last year for using up Snickers & Reese’s that I’m hoping to try this year.

  6. Katrina says:

All I can say is YUM! And hurray for Halloween candy! ;)

I didn’t see candy corn in your recipe or in the one on the M&M website. Will candy corn melt on top of bar cookies?

  8. Anna says:

They are very good, despite the fact that I can kind of taste of the baking powder. They baked up very soft and tender. I definitely recommend adding chocolate chips or chopped chocolate to both batters.

  9. Anna says:

I took the candy corn idea out, but I thought it would be good scattered across the top of the cooked brownies. I think if you scattered it on when they were very, very, hot, it would adhere.

  10. I just love how you think: Go trick or treat to get candy for baking, lol! I agree the m&m site has fun stuff and these look really nice! Are you gonna go disguised? Mybe you should get a cookie outfit!

  11. Anna says:

I’m going to dress up as The Internet.

  12. Lara says:

Hee! I love that you are trick-or-treating for baking purposes!

  13. maria says:

Festive treats, I love them!! I better go find some candy!

  14. Karen says:

I really want to try these – but I’m tempted to cut back on the baking powder, it does seem like a lot for brownies. Maybe I’ll try it with 1.5 teaspoons?

  15. Laurie says:

Good Call on the Trick or Treating Anna! I have been making treats from the candy for years–and that is from the haul my daughter brings in and what I have left over. I only buy treats that I can re-use! Love the look of these brownies! Laurie

  16. Those look soo yummy well here is another excuse to go trick or treating!!!

  17. Katrina says:

Last week when I made some chocolate chip cookie dough, just for kicks I added some candy corn to see how they’d do and they did melt. They were some new ones called caramel candy corn, they are tan (caramel), brown (chocolate) and white. They are good! The cookies were okay, mostly I just thought the candy corn made them TOO sweet. After baking (I only made three cookies), I couldn’t really see the candy like I wanted, so I stuck a few on top of the hot cookie, they did stick. I liked the caramelly taste to the cookies, but again, just too sweet.

wow these look so nice. They must be really popular with children

  19. Carrie says:

I made these this morning and they are quite tasty. I baked at 350 but I don’t think I left them in the oven long enough as the middle squares are a bit too gooey. I don’t know what it is about M & Ms in baked goods- they just taste better in dough!

  20. Anna says:

Carrie, thanks for letting me know. Mine took about 32 minutes. Maybe I should change the cook time to 32-40 minutes.

  21. RecipeGirl says:

Yay for this cute Halloween treat! m&m brownies are a winner with kids of every age for sure.

  22. Emquig says:

So delicious looking. I’ll be saving this for our playgroup Halloween party.

  23. Karen says:

I made a half batch of these today and baked it in an 8″ square pan at 350 for 32 minutes. I reduced the baking powder, using 3/4 teaspoon for the half batch. I used regular chocolate chips in the brownie part and ran out so I used mini chips in the top part. The top is a little pale, but they tested done and I’m glad I took them out when I did because they are definitely done. It has a nice chewiness and no baking powder taste! My daughter will love them.

  24. Julie says:

Where have yall found the halloween colored M&M’s–I want to make these for my daughters class but cannot find the colored M7M’s?

  25. Anna says:

    Hi Julie,

Target should have them. That’s where I’ve been buying mine. Good luck!

  26. Julie says:

    Anna
Thanks for the quick response–I was able to get the M&M’s at Target this morning and made a batch for my daughter’s class. They turned out great!

  27. Amy says:

I made theses Sunday, they were very pretty but my husband and I both didn’t think they tasted that great. Sort of blah. The pan never even got finished, sorry.

  28. Michele says:

These look and sound yummy! I assume by “going” trick-or-treating you mean you are taking children? I know in the towns I have lived there are age limits for trick-or-treating.
